Things to do in Riomaggiore

Riomaggiore is walked. From the apartment you drop into the village; from there you reach the sea, the trails and the other towns by train. The car, if you brought one, stays put.

No car needed from the stay

From Via De Gasperi you walk down to Via Colombo, the shops, the focaccia counters and the station. The harbour is the other end of the village: rocks, boats, sunset. For day trips you do not need the car. If you reserved a space, leave it there.

Sea and coves

Riomaggiore is not a riviera beach. You enter from rocks and coves. Wear shoes that hold on wet stone. In summer arrive early: shade goes first. You shower at home, not under a rented umbrella.

In calm water, swimming or a kayak shows the cliffs from below. When the Ligurian sea is up, stay on land: waves hit concrete here, not a soft shore.

Trails from Riomaggiore

The path to Manarola is the classic outing: climbs, terraces, views. Via dell’Amore, when open, is the flatter, busier option: check park status and tickets before you go. It is not always walkable.

Longer walks (sanctuaries, or linking villages) need proper shoes, water and a return-train time. In July the first sunny stretch is hard: leave at opening, not at 11:00 after a harbour coffee.

The other villages by train

Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso sit on the same line. Regional trains are frequent in season; a ticket-office queue makes you miss one. Buy a ticket or Cinque Terre Card first. Corniglia is high: from the station you climb or take the shuttle.

Do not try to “do all five in a day” starting late. You do two well, or three in a rush. The apartment in Riomaggiore exists so you come back, instead of chasing the last train to La Spezia on ruined feet.

One day or two, without a brochure list

Morning: harbour and rocks, or the Manarola path if the legs agree.
Lunch: in the village or packed. Dinner: cook at home or book a table — restaurants fill up.
Second day: another village by train and back before sunset at the harbour.
Rain: trails turn to slides. Museum, wine, kitchen, shower. Not “we go anyway”.
